Safi is a city in western Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the Doukkala-Abda Region, it is the main fishing port for the country's sardine industry, and also exports phosphates, textiles and ceramics.
Safi is a great city for people watching and window shopping. Also the site of many old ruins, a visit to Safi is not complete without a tour of the old Portuguese prison the Kechla, and the most photographed building in Safi, the Dar el Bahar castle.
Safi has a beach, although it is recommended to travel north along the coastal road towards Oualidia, where stretches of beaches run all the way along the route.
Do visit the ‘Dal el bahar’ a small fortress located in the old harbor. This fort has an underground tunnel that leads to the sea. You can walk down the ramp to have a greater view of the sea.
The central medina is a traditional Moroccan market. It is closely affiliated withpottery, and throughout the market vases, plates and other items are all made from clay and are popular with tourists.
