Passau is a city that lies where three rivers meet – the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz – in Germany’s Lower Bavaria region, near the Austrian border. Renowned as the ‘City of Three Rivers’, this picturesque city has a rich trade history and is filled with many monuments that stand in homage to its prestigious links to the Holy Roman Empire.

Passau is home to a range of stunning historical landmarks. Overlooking the city is Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century hilltop fortress that once served as a stronghold of the Bishop of Passau. In the old town below, you’ll discover a gorgeous mix of Baroque architecture, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Various cathedrals have stood here since the 8th century, though the current one dates to the 17th-century and is home to one of the largest church organs in the world with over 17,000 pipes.

There are plenty of adventurous activities to do outdoors in Passau. A popular embarkation port for a cruise along the Danube river is a great way to take in the sights of the city from the water, and offers plenty of holiday photography moments. The Danube Cycle Path between Passau and Vienna is renowned for its lush riverside and valley views too, and is a great way to get the adrenaline pumping.
