Bluie West One airfield was built on a glacial moraine at what is now the village of Narsarsuaq, near the southern tip of Greenland. Construction by the U.S. Army began in June 1941, and the first plane landed there in January 1942. Most inhabitants are employed at this still important airport. Ships up to 118 meters can dock here.
It has about 170 inhabitants. There is a thriving tourism industry in and around Narsarsuaq, whose attractions include a great diversity of wildlife, gemstones, tours to glaciers, and an airfield museum. Narsarsuaq is fairly wet, with Atlantic storms pounding the town all year.
Narsarsuaq offers several very nice walks.
