At the southern end of the narrow, fjord-like Lemaire Channel that threads between the western islands off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula lies Petermann Island, where French explorer Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot anchored in the Pourquoi-pas? In 1909. The southernmost breeding colony of Gentoo Penguins is situated on this 1.6 meter (1 mile island) located just below the Lemaire Channel. The dome of the island rises 200 meters (650 feet) above the sea. Adélie Penguins, shags and South Polar Skuas also inhabit the island. |
