Peter I Island, a dependency of Norway, lies in the Bellingshausen Sea about 400 miles (640 km) west of Palmer Land on the Antarctic Peninsula. Discovered by Bellinghausen, the Russian explorer in 1821, this was believed to be the first sighting of land within the Antarctic Circle. |
