Sightseeing:

"Welcome to the penal colony at Devil's Island, whose prisoners you are, and from which there is no escape." So went the announcement to the new prisoners in the movie Papillon. Only nowadays, Devil's Island is the escape.

Today, visitors arrive at Ile Royale, the only one of the three islands with landing facilities, to experience the haunting history of this former penal colony. Pathways allow you to circle the island and to wander among the overgrown ruins of prison cells and administrative buildings. A recent restoration program has been successful in recovering some of the buildings, one of which now houses a small museum.

Lightweight clothing and sun protection are prerequisites for going ashore here. The climate is hot and humid.

Tours/Excursions/Transportation:

While there are no organized excursions available, one or two English-speaking guides from the mainland are available for directions and to provide information. There are no motorized vehicles.

To walk around the island will take about 45 minutes.
